Swim, Bike, and Run your Age!
If Not Now, When?

Sean K

Starting an endurance blog...

I've been reading different endurance blogs for about 2 years now...and think it's about time I start my own. I've got a couple of questions for all you out there that currently have blogs:
1) Who is the 'best' provider for hosting one? Maybe this is like bikes...some like Cervelo, some Trek some Felt...I don't know
2) There are some good (and wacky) names for blog's out there. How did you come up with the name to your blog?
3) Security...with all the challenges we have these days about posting personal data on the web, how have you 'gotten over' this hurdle?
4) Any recommendations to do?
5) Any cautions to report?

Thanks, I've found many of the blogs to both be insightful and entertaining.

Hi Sean,

Most people use blogger.com for their blogs as it is free.

I like typepad.com.

They've been really good at adding features and keeping it really simple.

The name is totally up to you.

Some people go with cute, others go with professional, while others like it to reflect the sport they like best, while still others use a name that lead up to a race like myroaftoironman...that sort of thing.

Security is usually not an issue as you don't really put anything super private on the blog. In fact you don't even have to use your name. You can pick an avatar and not have it associated with your real identity if you choose. You can also make the blog private so that only invited guess can view it.

The only caution I can give you is that a blog can become very time consuming if you want to do it right so have fun with it, jump in, the water fine ;-)

Like Roman said, Blogger seems to be one of the sites of choice for the Tri Blog Community. I've used MSN Spaces, Blogger, and Weebly. In fact, there are still blogs up at all three locations, with Weebly being the current location of choice.

Put your creativity to good use in thinking up a name. And take your time. Assuming you do this long term, the name is (sort of) forever. Sometimes, the names just evolve. My original blog was "Running Pol" as it focused on my two passions, running and politics. As I became a triathlete and began the journey to Ironman, Iron Pol made sense. The more creative the name, the better "brand" it can develop.

In this day and age, you have to either accept that people will learn about you or stay completely off the Internet. The simple act of posting a race picture is often enough to find a great deal of information. Just decide how much you want to share, and go from there. Remember, the first time you post any details about a race (place, finish time, whatever), you've essentially identified yourself.

Good luck! Blogging can be as time consuming as training for and racing in endurance events. Sometimes more.

By the way, keep an eye out for me at Spirit of Racine. I'll be there, too.

Thanks Tom...great advice...and warning(s)!

By the way, I've loved using the "Tri Log" in Excel this year...man is there a lot of info that is gleaned from logging ones workouts! Thanks for sharing it with me!

See, one little comment and you've identified yourself...

Of course, that's a benefit, too. In time, people will start to recognize you (well, your screen name, at least). I had to go back and dig through my contact list. There, it's Sk.... instead of Sean K.

Glad you like the file. I've been using it for three years, now, and really like it.
